Cueva del viento (Cave of the Wind)
Terraces formed from the flow of lava.
The Cave of the Wind is the 5th largest volcanic cavity in the world, after those found in Hawaii such as the Kazumura Cave. However it is the largest cave in the world with a labyrinth formation.
At the moment, 18km/11mi of the cave have been explored and mapped by the Benisahare Tenerife Speleological Group. The exploration is ongoing and there is a possibility that it will expand to 21km/13mi if it can be connected to Cave Felipe.
Icod de los Vinos Valley is not only of great importance to volcanologists, but also to paleontologists and biologists. The Cave of the Wind consists of a series of interconnected caves including Cave Belen, Cave Sobrado, Cave Breveritas, and Cave Piquetes. So far, seven different accesses to the cave complex have been discovered.
